Over Weight Concern
Weight Concern is a small, dynamic, registered charity established in 1997 in response to the rising problem of obesity in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Jane Wardle, Professor of Clinical Psychology at University College London (UCL), to provide clear, evidence-based information on obesity and weight management, and to campaign for better prevention efforts and treatment options. It provides a voice for those who are overweight, regularly consulting with members of the public on weight-related issues and ensuring that their views and concerns are heard by the media and policy-makers. Weight Concern is committed to developing and researching new weight management approaches for different groups of society. The charity aims to increase the availability of the successful weight management programmes it has pioneered in the UK, such as the 'Shape Up' programme, a self-help adult weight management programme which can also be delivered as an 8-week group programme. Weight Concern also provides training and education for health professionals on issues surrounding weight management, and helps to educate the public on weight-related topics through resources and attendance at health promotion events. Weight Concern actively promotes a healthy lifestyle through its evidence-based resources such as 'Tiny Tastes', which was developed at UCL and aims to help young children enjoy vegetables.
